Why do people have dental implants?
'I've lost one tooth'
An implant can replace the missing tooth without needing to attach the new tooth to the teeth next to it.
I'm going to lose a tooth
If a tooth cannot be saved, an implant may be one way of replacing it.
My denture moves
Implants can sometimes be used to help hold a denture much more firmly.
I'm missing many teeth
Several implants can be used to support a bridge or, in some cases, a full set of fixed teeth.
Not sure which one applies to you? That's completely normal.
So… what actually is a dental implant?
A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. It sits in the jaw where your natural tooth root used to be. A new tooth can then be attached to it.
Joins the tooth to the implant
Sits where the root used to be
The implant sits safely inside the bone.
Think of it like rebuilding a tooth from the root up.
What is the implant made from?
Most dental implants are made from titanium. Titanium is strong and has been used in medicine for many years. Your bone can grow closely around the implant, helping it become firm and secure.
The tooth you see above the gum is made separately and designed to look like a real tooth.
Why do dentists use implants?
Dental implants can give us a way to replace a tooth without relying on the neighbouring teeth to hold it in place.
Fixed
They are designed to stay in place.
Strong
They can help you bite and chew with confidence.
Natural looking
The tooth on top is made to blend with your smile.
Independent
A single implant does not normally need the teeth either side to support it.
A long-term option
With good care, implants can last for decades.
Protective
They help preserve bone and avoid leaning on the teeth next door.
We don't start with the implant. Planning with Dr Gregory Flint.
Before placing an implant, we need to understand what is happening underneath your gum.
We look
We examine your teeth, gums and bite.
We scan
CBCT imaging is considered when clinically appropriate to assess bone and nearby structures.
We plan
We plan implant positions alongside the design of the replacement teeth.
Good implant dentistry is not just about placing an implant. It is about planning the tooth, the gum and the implant together.
